Speedometer

What is a Speedometer?

Speedometer is an instrument that indicates the speed of the vehicle. It is usually combined with a device known as the odometer, which records the distance travelled and is found on the dashboard of automobiles and is a legal requirement for all vehicles.

Speedometers can be mechanical or electrical. Mechanical speedometers measure the speed of an automobile by being linked mechanically with the gearbox output shaft. Since the shaft lies downstream of the gear box, the speed with which it rotates is independent of gear changes and will give the correct measure of the road speed. Electrical speedometers work on the designs derived from earlier eddy-current models.

A rotation sensor mounted on the transmission will deliver a series of electronic pulses whose frequency will correspond to the rotational speed of the drive shaft, and therefore to the vehicle’s speed, assuming the wheels has full traction. As the part in question will turn, the magnets will pass beneath the sensor and will produce a pulse in the sensor each time as they affect the strength of the magnetic field it is measuring.

Symptoms of a faulty speedometer

Speedometer is an instrument that indicates the speed of the vehicle. It is usually combined with a device known as the odometer, which records the distance travelled and is found on the dashboard of automobiles and is a legal requirement for all vehicles.

The following are the warning signs that may indicate a failing speedometer cable or housing:

1.Erratic or Inaccurate speedometer readings – One of the most obvious and common sings of a bad speedometer is inaccurate or erratic readings. If your speedometer readings are constantly jumping up and down or if it’s readings seem to be lower or higher than the actual speed, then you most likely have a faulty speedometer.

2.Hesitation when accelerating – If you start noting your car hesitating when you are trying to accelerate, it may be due to a faulty speedometer. But, this particular symptom can be caused by various other problems as well, so it’s important to get your vehicle checked by a mechanic before you come to any conclusions.

3.Trouble passing other cars – If you keep having trouble passing other cars on the highway, it may possibly because of a malfunctioning speedometer, since a faulty speedometer will lead to the ECU not being able to calculate how much fuel to inject into the cylinders. This will inevitably result in loss of power and you will not be able to pass the cars.

4.Check engine light is ON – If the check engine light is ON, it could point towards problems with parts other than the engine as well. Speedometer is one such part. The best way to diagnose the vehicle and figure out the case in this situation is to call a mechanic.

5.Car slows when idle – If you notice that your car is slowing down while idling, there might be a problem with the speedometer. It’s best to call in a professional and diagnose this issue as soon as possible once noticed.
